Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, announced that by 2026 the country will have more than one thousand LIBRE Centers for Women, a project she described as historic and aimed at guaranteeing spaces for support, development, and assistance for women in municipalities across the country.

During the morning press conference known as “Las mañaneras del pueblo,” the president explained that 323 new centers will be created this year with an investment of 983 million 491 thousand pesos. These will be added to the 678 centers that were established in 2025 as part of this national strategy.

Sheinbaum Pardo highlighted that the LIBRE Centers are spaces designed for women to receive psychological, legal, and social counseling. They will also offer community activities, libraries, and reading clubs that promote personal development and social interaction.

The Secretary of Women, Citlalli Hernández Mora, stated that these spaces are being promoted through coordination among the three levels of government. She added that by 2026, 40 percent of the national goal of 2,478 centers planned throughout the country will have been achieved.

Currently, ten states already have full municipal coverage: Sinaloa, Querétaro, Tabasco, Campeche, Baja California Sur, Aguascalientes, Quintana Roo, Colima, Baja California, and Michoacán. Meanwhile, the federal government also plans to promote an initiative so that all states apply a common methodology in the investigation of the crime of femicide.
