The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, announced that the Electoral Reform proposal will be sent to the Congress of the Union in January 2026, once the public consultations scheduled from September to December 2025 across the country are concluded.
During her morning press conference, “Las Mañaneras del Pueblo,” the president reported that the forums organized by the Presidential Commission for Electoral Reform have already begun, allowing citizens to participate directly either by attending the state venues or through the microsite reformaelectoral.gob.mx, which provides information on the current electoral system and receives citizen proposals.
The head of the Commission, Pablo Gómez Álvarez, explained that the goal is to listen to the opinions of the population, organize public debates, conduct studies, and present proposals to draft a comprehensive initiative on electoral matters. Among the topics under consultation are: political freedoms, representation of the people, party system, financing and oversight, effectiveness of suffrage, political communication, electoral justice, and participatory democracy.
So far, the microsite has received more than 10,000 visits, and four forums have been held in Mexico City. The schedule includes events in every state, led by various members of the federal cabinet, including the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez; the Coordinator of Policy and Government, Arturo Zaldívar; the Legal Counsel, Ernestina Godoy; and the Chief of Staff, Lázaro Cárdenas Batel.
Sheinbaum Pardo reiterated that this exercise aims to ensure a reform built with the voice of the people and stressed that participatory democracy will be a central axis of the proposal. “It is an open process for citizens to express themselves; in January, based on these consultations, we will present the initiative before Congress,” she emphasized.
