President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo led the groundbreaking ceremony for the Arroyo El Sauz–Nuevo Laredo section of the Gulf of Mexico Train, a key project for the country’s railway connectivity and development. The 136.48-kilometer route is expected to generate 10,922 direct jobs and 32,766 indirect ones.

From the Treasury Hall at the National Palace, the president connected live with Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, to signal the start of this major infrastructure project. “We are giving the starting signal for another part of the Saltillo–Nuevo Laredo railway, and we’re doing it right here, from La Mañanera,” she said.

Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation, explained that the start of construction coincides with a symbolic date for the railway sector. Meanwhile, Andrés Lajous Loaeza, head of the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency, highlighted that the Gulf of Mexico Train will allow travel times of under two hours from Monterrey and three and a half hours from Saltillo to Nuevo Laredo.

The project includes 52 railway bridges, 42 vehicle crossings, 108 drainage works, and three stations: two low-demand stops in Lampazos de Naranjo and Anáhuac, and a passenger station at the Nuevo Laredo terminal. Site clearing, land preparation, and right-of-way work are already underway to make way for the embankments.

Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya praised the project as a visionary initiative by President Sheinbaum, one that will connect communities and strengthen Nuevo Laredo’s role as Latin America’s leading logistics border.
