President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo introduced a Committee of Scientists and Specialists that will analyze the potential sustainable development of natural gas in non-conventional fields, as part of the strategy to strengthen the country’s energy sovereignty.
During the announcement, the president explained that this high-level interdisciplinary group will issue an initial recommendation within two months, based on scientific evidence, after which a consultation process with communities will be opened, given that this is a collective decision.
The committee is composed of specialists from institutions such as UNAM, UAM, IPN, UANL, UAdeC, the Mexican Institute of Water Technology (IMTA), the Mexican Petroleum Institute (IMP), and the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Change, among others. She noted that this represents an unprecedented exercise in collaboration between academia and government.
Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation Secretary Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez emphasized that the creation of this group seeks to provide scientific rigor and public trust, applying knowledge for social well-being and environmental protection.
Finally, academic authorities agreed that this effort will allow for a responsible evaluation of the impacts and benefits of non-conventional gas development, with the aim of reducing energy dependence and ensuring informed decision-making for the country’s future.
