President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that flood prevention projects in the eastern region of the State of Mexico have reached 90 percent completion and are expected to be finished during July. She stated that four of the six projects are already operational, helping accelerate water drainage during recent heavy rains.
During her morning press conference, Las Mañaneras del Pueblo, the president explained that the remaining two projects will be completed in approximately 15 days. As an example, she noted that after recent rainfall in Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl, a large accumulation of water was drained in about an hour and a half thanks to the infrastructure already in operation.
The National Water Commission (Conagua) reported that it is investing 11.2 billion pesos in flood prevention projects across the country, including 2.2 billion pesos allocated to six projects in the eastern State of Mexico, primarily benefiting the municipalities of Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl and La Paz, as well as Iztapalapa in Mexico City.
Conagua Director General Efraín Morales López detailed that the expansion of El Salado Lagoon, the Teotongo Collector, and the Carmelo Pérez Collector together with the Xochiaca Pumping Station have already been completed. He added that the Los Pinos Collector is 88 percent complete, while the expansion of the Churubusco Lagoon channels has reached 85 percent, with both projects expected to be finished within the next 15 days.
He also reported that, under President Claudia Sheinbaum’s instructions, construction is underway on the Chalco de Díaz Covarrubias Collector to address flooding in Chalco and Valle de Chalco. The project currently includes three kilometers of microtunneling work and is scheduled for completion in October.
