From the National Palace, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo kicked off the construction of the “El Novillo” dam in La Paz, Baja California Sur, a strategic infrastructure project with an investment of 2.4 billion pesos between 2025 and 2027. The dam will provide 53 liters of water per second, directly benefiting 250,000 residents.

During a live broadcast as part of the morning press conference, the federal president emphasized the importance of this hydraulic project, which also includes the construction of a 15-kilometer aqueduct and elevated storage tanks. The project will generate 700 direct jobs and 1,400 indirect ones.

Efraín Morales López, general director of the National Water Commission (Conagua), highlighted that this is the most significant water infrastructure project carried out in the state in decades due to its impact on supply, infrastructure, and social development. He reiterated the federal government’s commitment to ensuring water access for those who need it most.

State governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío celebrated the launch of the project, noting that no similar infrastructure had been built in the state for over 30 years. He proposed naming the dam “La mujer perseverante” (“The Persevering Woman”), in honor of the effort and persistence the project represents.

Milena Paola Quiroga Romero, municipal president of La Paz, thanked the Government of Mexico for its support and described the beginning of the project as a “perfect ending” for the year. She emphasized that the new dam will mark a turning point in the city’s hydraulic infrastructure.
