President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that she will send a proposal to Congress to modify the date of the Judicial Branch elections, moving them from 2027 to Sunday, June 4, 2028, at both the federal and local levels, while also proposing changes to electoral ballots to simplify the voting process.

During the “Las Mañaneras del Pueblo” press conference, the president explained that the proposal aims to facilitate citizen participation and prevent voters from having to go to different polling stations during concurrent elections. She noted that, if approved, the judicial election could be held on the same day as a possible recall referendum in 2028.

Federal Executive Legal Counsel Luisa María Alcalde Luján detailed that the 2028 election would renew positions including four magistrates of the Superior Chamber of the Federal Electoral Tribunal, 463 magistrates of Collegiate Circuit Courts, 385 District Judges, as well as local magistrates and judges in 25 states.

Among the proposed modifications is the creation of a Coordinating Commission to standardize candidate evaluation criteria, reduce the number of candidates appearing on ballots through public drawing processes, and simplify ballot design so citizens can vote more clearly and easily for judges and magistrates in different specialty areas.

The initiative also proposes additional adjustments such as conducting vote counting and certification at the same polling stations, advancing the timeline for issuing election calls, strengthening mandatory training for judges and magistrates, and establishing standardized mechanisms for judicial elections at the state level.
