President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that she will send a proposal to Congress to reform the General Law of Electoral Institutions and Procedures, with the aim of strengthening candidate review mechanisms and preventing individuals with possible ties to organized crime from participating in electoral processes.

The initiative includes the creation of the Candidate Integrity Verification Commission, a body under the National Electoral Institute (INE), which would be responsible for analyzing the profiles of applicants voluntarily submitted by political parties to detect potential risks related to criminal activities.

According to the proposal, the Commission would consult information from agencies such as the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV), the National Intelligence Center (CNI), and the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), which would determine whether there is a reasonable risk associated with each applicant.

Based on these findings, political parties would be responsible for deciding whether or not to register a candidate. In addition, the reform establishes that the process would be carried out under strict confidentiality and while respecting the presumption of innocence, without affecting investigations or due process.

The President explained that this proposal seeks to strengthen transparency and integrity in democratic processes ahead of the 2027 electoral process, while also reinforcing public trust in electoral and justice institutions.
