President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo presented the Strategy to Strengthen Energy Sovereignty, which includes the development of natural gas reserves, the promotion of renewable energy, and the use of more efficient equipment, with the aim of reducing dependence on imports and ensuring the country’s development.
During the “Las Mañaneras del Pueblo” press conference, the president emphasized that this policy places sovereignty, national development, and environmental sustainability at its core, while acknowledging that reducing imports will be a gradual process that could take between 10 and 15 years.
The strategy includes the development of conventional natural gas fields and, in the case of non-conventional resources, the creation of a committee of scientists and specialists who will assess their feasibility in terms of water use, environmental impact, and sustainability, with results expected within two months.
Meanwhile, Energy Secretary Luz Elena González Escobar reported that Mexico currently consumes 9 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day, of which 75 percent is imported, mainly from Texas and California, creating vulnerability to external factors and limiting regional development.
At the same time, Pemex Director General Víctor Rodríguez Padilla detailed that there is significant potential in both conventional and non-conventional gas reserves, and that production is expected to increase by 2030, while the share of energy generation from renewable sources is projected to rise from 24 to 38 percent.
