Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that in 2026, the government will allocate 50 billion pesos to the National Highway Maintenance Program and the “Bachetón” initiative, aimed at rehabilitating 18,000 kilometers of the Federal Highway Network and generating 100,000 jobs across the country.

During her daily morning press conference, “Las Mañaneras del Pueblo,” Sheinbaum emphasized that this strategy is based on a comprehensive assessment of road conditions and citizen requests collected nationwide. She called on governors and mayors to join efforts and allocate part of their budgets to road improvements.

The Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport, Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, explained that 70% of the road segments targeted for intervention are part of main highway routes. The investment will be distributed across five regions: Northwest with 8.659 billion pesos; Northeast with 7.113 billion; Center-West with 7.3 billion; Central region with 7.243 billion; and South-Southeast with 10.873 billion pesos.

To boost operational capacity, 11 new paving trains will be acquired in 2026, adding to the 20 purchased in 2025. Each state will be equipped with machinery to perform milling, road surface recovery, and micro-paving on toll-free federal highways.

Regarding the “Bachetón” program, 372 million pesos will be invested in the acquisition of 62 specialized units. Weekly inspections of the federal highway network will be conducted to identify potholes, which must be repaired within a maximum of 72 hours, monitored through the SICT’s information and control system.
