With the active participation of 1.2 million young people across the country, the Government of Mexico launched the 2nd National Day of Tequios and Murals for Peace and Against Addictions. This initiative, promoted by the Mexican Institute of Youth (IMJUVE), seeks to strengthen the social fabric by recovering public spaces through art, culture, and youth organization.
During her morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo highlighted the importance of providing young people with life alternatives that foster community, companionship, and peacebuilding. “Collective activities help young people find other life alternatives, to build companionship linked to peace, and to prevent any access to drugs,” she emphasized.
The program includes the creation of more than 8,000 murals throughout the country, as well as the invitation to young people to join Youth Committees for Transformation. Their mission is to promote sports, artistic and cultural activities such as chess tournaments, reading sessions, and the restoration of public spaces in their communities.
At the official launch, President Sheinbaum spoke via video link with young people from various states who had already begun the activities. She recalled that her administration prioritizes policies aimed at youth, such as the Línea de la Vida (800 911 2000), the creation of new cultural and sports centers starting in 2026, and the national expansion of the successful program Jóvenes Unen al Barrio, originally launched in Mexico City.
IMJUVE Director Abraham Carro Toledo stressed that the initiative not only promotes art as a means of expression but also encourages youth organization as a driver of transformation. “In the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum, young people are being called to organize and become protagonists of the transformation taking place in Mexico,” he stated.
