Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized that the new Well-being Pension Fund represents a solidarity-based system that ensures fair pensions for teachers and public sector workers. With this initiative, workers earning up to 16,000 pesos will be able to retire with 100% of their salary, thanks to a supplement funded through resources saved via the Republic’s Austerity Program.

During her morning press conference, the president stated that this model improves upon the individual accounts system introduced by the 2007 pension reform, as it establishes the Mexican State’s commitment to providing pension supplements for those affiliated with IMSS or ISSSTE. She also confirmed that the retirement age has been frozen at 58 for women with 28 years of service and at 60 for men with 30 years.

Sheinbaum added that dialogue with the National Coordinating Committee of Education Workers (CNTE) remains open through the Ministries of the Interior, Public Education, Finance, and ISSSTE. She urged the union to consider the government’s proposals objectively, rejecting calls to boycott the electoral process or block public infrastructure such as the Mexico City International Airport. Her administration, she affirmed, favors respect and negotiation.

Secretary of Public Education Mario Delgado Carrillo explained that under the 2007 reform, pensions were reduced to as low as 27% of a worker’s salary. Now, with the Well-being Pension Fund, full salary retirement will be guaranteed. He also highlighted the highest teacher pay increase in 40 years, with an average salary now reaching 18,965 pesos per month.

Finally, Sheinbaum noted that the Fourth Transformation has reaffirmed the dignity of Mexico’s teaching profession by repealing the so-called “Education Reform,” regularizing nearly one million teachers, eliminating USICAMM, and promoting a new education model developed in direct consultation with teachers across the country.
