Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced a 25 percent reduction in intentional homicides during the first seven months of her administration. The daily average dropped from 86.9 in September 2024 to 65.3 in April 2025 — a decrease of 21 homicides per day — as a result of the National Security Strategy (ENS) and coordinated efforts between federal, state, and municipal authorities.
During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum highlighted that April 2025 recorded the lowest daily average of intentional homicides since 2016. There was also a 33.3 percent decrease compared to April 2020, and a 27.3 percent drop in relation to the annual average between 2018 and 2025. The president praised the efforts of the National Guard, the Army, the Navy, and the Attorney General’s Office, describing the results as an “extraordinary effort” by all security forces.
In states like Guanajuato, intentional homicides dropped by 48.9 percent between February and April 2025, from 12.7 to 6.5 per day. In Baja California, the decline was 45.8 percent; in the State of Mexico, 30.7 percent; and in Chihuahua, 26.5 percent. Nationwide, high-impact crimes also fell by 19.25 percent between October 2024 and April 2025.
Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, reported the arrest of over 20,000 individuals for high-impact crimes during this period. Authorities also seized more than 154 tons of drugs and 10,000 firearms. As part of the Northern Border Operation, 2,627 weapons, over 400,000 cartridges, more than one million fentanyl pills, and 30 tons of drugs — mostly originating from the United States — were confiscated.
Meanwhile, the federal government denounced that between 2024 and early 2025, there were 193 judicial rulings that favored alleged criminals, resulting in over 160 releases due to changes in precautionary measures. President Sheinbaum stressed that this underscores the need for judicial reform. She reminded the public that on June 1st, a new Judicial Discipline Tribunal will be elected to oversee the conduct of judges and magistrates chosen by the people.
