Starting May 2, the Government of Mexico will implement the Health House to House program, a national strategy aimed at providing comprehensive and regular medical care directly in the homes of elderly individuals and people with disabilities. The initiative will deploy 19,300 healthcare workers to serve over 8 million people already registered by the Ministry of Welfare.
During her morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo explained that these home visits will include the creation of clinical records and health evaluations using portable equipment. Healthcare personnel will carry basic tools such as stethoscopes, blood pressure monitors, and glucometers to check vital signs and identify conditions requiring urgent attention. In such cases, they will coordinate with the Ministry of Health to refer patients to the appropriate healthcare centers.
Visits will take place monthly or every two months depending on each person’s health condition. The president noted that health workers were hired based on proximity to the communities they will serve, ensuring efficient coverage and stronger bonds with the population. In remote or hard-to-reach areas, medical brigades made up of a doctor, nurse, nursing technician, and a community liaison will be organized.
Patients will be able to obtain their prescribed medications at IMSS, ISSSTE, or IMSS-Bienestar facilities. Additional distribution channels for chronic treatments will be available through Wellbeing Stores, Banks of Wellbeing, or nearby access points. In the long term, a Remote Health Call Center is planned to offer continuous medical guidance and strengthen the care network.
Minister of Welfare Ariadna Montiel Reyes explained that the first visit will include a full medical history, vital signs check, nutritional evaluation, rapid health tests, and training for caregivers on oral hygiene and general care. Based on the assessments, patients will be classified into four groups according to their autonomy and health status. This categorization will guide the delivery of personalized care using National Medical Care Protocols (PRONAM).
