The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, reported that the country recorded a 46 percent reduction in intentional homicides between September 2024 and May 2026, with the daily average falling from 86.9 victims to 47.3. The president noted that this represents 39 fewer homicides per day and attributed the result to the implementation of the National Security Strategy and efforts to combat corruption.
During the morning press conference “Las mañaneras del pueblo,” the head of the federal government highlighted that May 2026 recorded the lowest number of intentional homicides for that month in the last 12 years. She also stated that the decrease reflects an almost 50 percent reduction compared to the levels recorded at the beginning of her administration and emphasized that other high-impact crimes are also showing a downward trend.
Marcela Figueroa Franco, Executive Secretary of the National Public Security System, explained that the daily average of high-impact crimes decreased by 31 percent, dropping from 636.6 cases in September 2024 to 437.7 in May 2026. She added that 28 states reduced their daily average of intentional homicides during the first five months of the year, highlighting results achieved in states such as San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, and Quintana Roo.
Meanwhile, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection Omar García Harfuch reported that more than 56,000 people were arrested for high-impact crimes between October 2024 and May 2026. Authorities also seized nearly 30,000 firearms, approximately 420 tons of drugs, and more than five million fentanyl pills. In addition, 2,407 clandestine laboratories and methamphetamine production sites were dismantled across 22 states.
Secretary of the Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez highlighted the progress of the “Addressing the Root Causes” component of the National Security Strategy, through which millions of public services and procedures have been provided, public spaces have been recovered, and community-based violence prevention initiatives have been carried out. President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated that these results stem from a comprehensive strategy based on institutional coordination, social intervention, and the strengthening of security efforts throughout the country.
