Mexico City.- As part of World Environment Day, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced the development of a special decree to promote ecotourism in Mahahual, Quintana Roo, with the goal of protecting the region’s natural environment and advancing a sustainable development model in collaboration with local communities.
During her morning press conference “Las mañaneras del pueblo,” the president explained that the measure seeks to prevent large-scale tourism developments in the area and instead encourage ecotourism activities that generate economic and social benefits for residents of southern Quintana Roo.
The decree will be developed through a joint effort involving the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur), the National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur), and the Government of Quintana Roo. The objective is to establish mechanisms for environmental protection and the sustainable use of the region’s natural resources.
Environment Secretary Alicia Bárcena Ibarra stated that the initiative reflects the vision of local communities to develop responsible tourism that combines economic growth, job creation, and environmental conservation. She also emphasized the importance of strengthening hotels, restaurants, and small local businesses through a sustainable development framework.
In addition, authorities introduced the México Circular and Holbox Circular initiatives, which are designed to promote a circular economy and reduce the use of single-use plastics in tourist destinations. Through these actions, the Government of Mexico aims to position Mahahual as a leading ecotourism destination on the Costa Maya while ensuring the preservation of its natural resources for future generations.
