Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced a historic savings of 12 billion pesos in the consolidated procurement of medications and medical supplies for the 2025–2026 period, thanks to the implementation of a reverse auction model. This strategy enabled the purchase of 399 product types, totaling 988 million units, with full transparency and without compromising quality.

Speaking at her morning press conference, Sheinbaum explained that the new model fosters competitive bidding among suppliers to offer the lowest prices while upholding strict health standards. The achievement was made possible by reforming the Procurement Law and coordinating efforts between the Ministry of Health, Birmex, and the Secretariat for Anti-Corruption and Good Governance.

Deputy Secretary Eduardo Clark García Dobarganes detailed that the initial projected cost for the procurement was 35 billion pesos, but the reverse auction brought it down to 23 billion, yielding savings equivalent to building five 120-bed IMSS hospitals or paying the annual salary of 30,000 medical specialists. Award notifications were issued to suppliers last Friday to enable immediate distribution.

On public health matters, Health Secretary David Kershenobich reported progress under the National Dengue and Arbovirus Control Plan, which has so far installed over 207,000 ovitraps and treated nearly seven million homes with larvicide since February. Insecticide distribution and interventions in high-risk zones are underway, alongside research efforts to develop a dengue vaccine.

In other updates, the IMSS announced plans for 5.7 million additional consultations in 2025 under its 2-30-100 strategy. The ISSSTE highlighted progress in national surgical campaigns, and IMSS Bienestar confirmed that the new General Hospital of Tlapa de Comonfort, in Guerrero, will soon be inaugurated. The facility will benefit more than 400,000 people, most of whom are speakers of indigenous languages.
