Fulfilling a campaign promise, President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo led the groundbreaking ceremony for the new IMSS General Hospital in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora. The hospital will feature 120 beds, 15 consultation rooms, and specialties such as immunology, cardiology, maxillofacial surgery, dermatology, medical oncology, urology, and psychiatry. The project will be executed by military engineers from the Secretariat of National Defense and is expected to be completed within a year.
During the event, the President highlighted the capacity of the Mexican Army in carrying out strategic infrastructure projects such as AIFA, the Maya Train, National Guard barracks, and now IMSS hospitals, including this one in San Luis Río Colorado. She also thanked the donors of the hospital land and acknowledged the work of the medical staff who will operate it.
Sheinbaum also announced the modernization of the municipality’s public lighting through the “Paths of Peace” program, which will replace sodium lamps with more efficient technology, as part of her commitment to community safety and well-being.
IMSS Director General Zoé Robledo reported that the new hospital will triple the capacity of the current Sub-Zonal General Hospital, addressing the increase in beneficiaries in Sonora, which has gained 127,000 new affiliates. The hospital will include state-of-the-art technology such as magnetic resonance imaging, CT scanners, mammography equipment, X-rays, and a hemodialysis unit.
Secretary of Health David Kershenobich stated that this hospital will be key to bringing prevention, diagnosis, and dignified treatment services closer to the people. Meanwhile, General Salvador Fernando Cervantes Loza explained that this project is part of the IMSS Infrastructure Plan 2025–2030, which includes new hospitals in seven Mexican states.
Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo emphasized that this hospital will double the city’s healthcare capacity and will join new medical units in Navojoa, the Yaqui Nation, and the IMSS-Bienestar University Hospital. He also praised President Sheinbaum for her firm and prudent leadership in maintaining relations with the United States.
