Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has launched pre-operational testing of Line 11 of the Chalco–Santa Marta Trolleybus, a sustainable mobility project scheduled to open on May 18. The new system will reduce travel time between eastern State of Mexico and Mexico City from 90 minutes to just 40.
During the official launch, Sheinbaum emphasized that the project brings both social and environmental justice to millions, describing it as a fast, efficient, and electric transportation system. She stated that the project is unique worldwide, as it features a second level highway exclusively for trolleybuses, ensuring an emission-free and congestion-free route.
The Trolleybus will connect the Iztapalapa borough in Mexico City with the State of Mexico municipalities of La Paz, Nezahualcóyotl, Chalco, Valle de Chalco, and Ixtapaluca, benefiting 2.9 million people. Although six stations are still under construction, operations are expected to begin on schedule.
Andrés Lajous Loaeza, head of the Federal Rail Transport Regulatory Agency, noted that 102 trolleybuses were purchased with an investment of 1.411 billion pesos. The service will be operated by Mexico City’s Electric Transport Service. The line is projected to serve 76,000 daily users in the capital and 120,000 from the State of Mexico.
Also attending the event were Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada Molina and State of Mexico Governor Delfina Gómez Álvarez, who highlighted that this metropolitan infrastructure project not only improves mobility, but also provides dignified and affordable transportation for those who need it most. The Trolleybus is part of the Comprehensive Plan for Eastern State of Mexico, Love is Repaid with Love, which includes health, education, security, and urban development initiatives for thousands of families.
