President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has affirmed her administration’s commitment to prioritizing dialogue with the United States, aiming to maintain a relationship grounded in respect and cooperation. She highlighted the ongoing fluid communication with the U.S. government and emphasized that her administration will work diligently to ensure this robust relationship continues, acknowledging the intertwined economic growth of both nations.
Deep Economic Integration
In her morning press conference, «Las mañaneras del pueblo,» President Sheinbaum discussed the profound economic integration between Mexico and the United States, which enhances their competitiveness on the global stage. She reiterated her administration’s commitment to boosting national production and reducing imports through the Plan México initiative. However, she emphasized the importance of collaborating with the United States and Canada, cautioning against measures like tariffs that could adversely affect both economies.
Interconnected Automotive Industry
As an example of this interdependence, Sheinbaum noted that in the automotive industry, a component such as a piston may cross the border up to eight times between the two countries before becoming part of a finished vehicle. This illustrates the fully interconnected nature of the regional economy. She warned that implementing trade barriers would increase production costs, negatively impacting both consumers and businesses.
Acknowledgment from U.S. Ambassador Nominee
Her remarks follow statements by Ronald Johnson, nominated by President Donald Trump as the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, who acknowledged the significance of the bilateral relationship. Johnson highlighted that Mexico is the United States’ principal trading partner and expressed confidence that both economies are poised to continue growing together, strengthening the commercial and cultural ties that have long defined their relationship.
