President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has called for an Informative Assembly at Mexico City’s Zócalo on Sunday, March 9, at 12:00 PM, to outline the tariff and non-tariff measures Mexico will implement in response to the United States’ unilateral decision to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican exports.
«I invite all Mexicans to this gathering to share the actions we will undertake. We are a free, independent, and sovereign country. Together, we will move forward,» emphasized Sheinbaum during her morning conference «Las mañaneras del pueblo.»
The President highlighted that this is a pivotal moment for defending Mexico’s sovereignty, urging national unity and a composed yet firm stance. «I call on the people of Mexico to face this challenge together, to remain united. It is time to defend Mexico and its sovereignty. We must stay alert and calm. Our people are strong, and our nation is powerful,» she stated.
Sheinbaum clarified that the forthcoming measures are not intended to provoke an economic confrontation but to assert a dignified response to a decision that adversely affects both nations. «No one benefits from this decision; on the contrary, it harms the people we represent,» she noted.
She also underscored her administration’s efforts against organized crime and fentanyl trafficking, citing a 50% reduction in fentanyl seizures at the border, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data. In five months, nearly 7,000 firearms have been seized, 121.4 tons of drugs confiscated, 329 clandestine laboratories dismantled, and 26.4 tons of cocaine intercepted in maritime operations. Additionally, 13,858 individuals have been arrested for high-impact crimes, and 29 criminals extradited to the U.S.
