Mexico City – President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has announced the implementation of six immediate actions to address the issue of forced disappearances and missing persons, emphasizing that her administration will not tolerate impunity or the construction of partial truths.
Immediate Actions Against Disappearances
President Sheinbaum outlined the following six measures to enhance search efforts, identification processes, and justice in cases of disappearance:
- Strengthening the National Search Commission: Enhancing its analytical capabilities and scientific technology.
- Reforming Key Legislation: Amending the General Population Law and the General Law on Disappearance to:
- Consolidate the Unique Population Registry Code (CURP): Establishing it as the sole source of identity to facilitate the search for individuals.
- Create a Unified National Forensic Information Base: Compiling data from all prosecutors’ offices and forensic services.
- Implement the National Human Identification Platform: Connecting administrative records, forensic data, and the electoral roll to cross-reference fingerprints.
- Immediate Search Alerts: Issuing nationwide alerts and automatically opening investigation files without the 72-hour waiting period.
- Equating Disappearance with Kidnapping: Standardizing penalties and procedures across all prosecutors’ offices.
- Monthly Publication of Disappearance Statistics: Releasing data with information from state prosecutors and the Attorney General’s Office.
- Strengthening the Executive Commission for Victim Assistance: Ensuring support and counseling for families of missing persons.
Justice in the Teuchitlán Case
Regarding the case in Teuchitlán, Jalisco, President Sheinbaum assured that the Government of Mexico is committed to clarifying the events with scientific evidence and punishing those responsible. «We will never conceal anything, and the truth must always prevail. In my administration, there will be no dark construction of historical truths,» she asserted.
