President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has announced the construction of seven new hospitals for the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). These facilities will be built by engineers from the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) and will benefit 2.9 million people across seven states. The initiative is expected to create between 70,000 and 100,000 direct jobs, along with a comparable number of indirect jobs.
During the morning press conference «Las Mañaneras del Pueblo,» IMSS Director General Zoé Robledo Aburto and Secretary of National Defense, General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, signed the Defense-IMSS Collaboration Agreement, marking the commencement of hospital construction. The projects will be located in Santa Catarina (Nuevo León), San Luis Río Colorado (Sonora), Yecapixtla (Morelos), Saltillo (Coahuila), Los Cabos (Baja California Sur), Culiacán (Sinaloa), and Guadalupe (Zacatecas).
The first three hospitals, which already have executive projects and will begin construction immediately, are:
- Regional General Hospital in Santa Catarina, Nuevo León: This facility will have 260 beds, serve 300,000 people, and offer 39 specialties and services, including magnetic resonance imaging, tomography, X-rays, and hemodynamics. It will generate 2,531 direct jobs and cover an area of 50,635 square meters.
- General Hospital of Zone in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora: With 120 beds, this hospital will cater to 134,000 people, providing 28 specialties and services such as magnetic resonance imaging, tomography, and mammography. It will employ 1,100 staff members and occupy 32,000 square meters.
- General Hospital of Zone in Yecapixtla, Morelos: This 90-bed facility will serve 116,000 people, offering 28 specialties and advanced medical services. It will have 984 employees and span 28,805 square meters.
The remaining hospitals, which will also commence construction this year, include:
- Regional General Hospital in Saltillo, Coahuila
- General Hospital of Zone in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur
- General Hospital of Zone in Culiacán, Sinaloa
- General Hospital of Zone in Guadalupe, Zacatecas
