Mexico City — President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that Mexico currently enjoys a preferential status compared to other global economies, the result of a respectful, coordinated, and ongoing dialogue with the United States government, led by President Donald Trump. This relationship has helped Mexico avoid the imposition of new tariffs, reinforcing its position in the global economy.

During her morning press conference “The People’s Morning Briefing,” Sheinbaum emphasized that this bilateral relationship—grounded in mutual respect and cooperation—has been key to maintaining favorable conditions under the USMCA (T-MEC). “There are no additional tariffs on Mexico, and that is due to the mutual respect we have built between both governments,” she said, adding that the strength of her administration lies in the unity between the people and the government.

Sheinbaum explained that Mexican products complying with USMCA rules of origin continue to enter the U.S. tariff-free. Non-originating products could face a reduced 12% tariff, provided that cooperation continues on shared priorities such as migration and the fight against fentanyl. She also confirmed ongoing talks with the U.S. regarding sectors like automotive, steel, and aluminum.

Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon highlighted that Mexico was the only country among 14 U.S. trade partners not subject to new tariffs. He credited this outcome to President Sheinbaum’s negotiation strategy, which has safeguarded over 10 million jobs and positioned Mexico as a reliable, competitive regional partner.

Ebrard noted that key sectors—including agri-food, electronics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, apparel, footwear, and machinery—benefited by being excluded from the new tariff scheme. Sheinbaum concluded by stating that in addition to ongoing talks with the U.S., her administration will accelerate actions under the Mexico Plan to strengthen the national economy and public well-being.
