President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that, following a call with U.S. President Donald Trump, both nations agreed that Mexico will not face tariffs on products included in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). This arrangement will remain in effect until April 2, when the U.S. government will determine new international trade tariffs. During her participation in the morning conference «Las mañaneras del pueblo,» Sheinbaum highlighted that the dialogue occurred in a framework of mutual respect and cooperation, ensuring that both countries continue collaborating on various topics of common interest without affecting bilateral relations.

Security Achievements and Reduction in Fentanyl Trafficking

In her conversation with Trump, the Mexican president presented data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), showing a 41.5% reduction in fentanyl seizures at the border during February. She explained that this outcome results from security measures implemented by her administration, including the deployment of 10,000 National Guard members to the border since February 3 and the extradition of 29 individuals to the United States. «If we are seizing more fentanyl in Mexico, less fentanyl will reach the United States, something we have been reporting every 15 days,» she emphasized. Additionally, Sheinbaum highlighted agreements reached in recent meetings between teams from both countries in Washington, prioritizing the reduction of drug trafficking from Mexico to the U.S. and the decrease of illegal arms trafficking from the U.S. to Mexico.

Respect for Sovereignty and Mexico’s Economic Development

Sheinbaum emphasized that the agreement with Trump is not only an achievement of her administration but of the entire Mexican populace, as the negotiation was based on principles of sovereignty and mutual respect. «We were treated with much respect. I say ‘we’ because, yes, it’s the President of Mexico, but it’s the people of Mexico, because I represent the people of Mexico,» she stated. She reiterated her commitment to continue working for the country’s economic development and to maintain a strong and respectful relationship with the United States.
