Baja California, Mexico — In a public event held at the northern border of the country, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reaffirmed her commitment to maintaining a relationship of respect, friendship, and coordination with the United States. Her approach is guided by five key principles of Mexican foreign policy: shared responsibility, mutual trust, respect for sovereignty, cooperation without subordination, and respect for the people of Mexico.

During the launch of the “Housing for Wellbeing” Program, which includes the construction of 50,000 homes in Baja California (35,000 by Infonavit and 15,000 by Conavi), Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of preserving free trade with the U.S. and avoiding tariffs, stressing that the economies of both countries are deeply integrated.

«Here in Baja California, people know this very well: many plants manufacture products for the U.S. We will continue negotiating with our heads held high because Mexico deserves respect,» she stated.

She also addressed a message of recognition to Mexican migrants in the United States, calling them heroes and heroines of the homeland, assuring them that her government supports and stands with them.

The president announced that next Monday she will sign a decree to freeze balances and monthly payments for state workers who are burdened with unpayable debts to FOVISSSTE. This decree will also allow the fund to begin building housing, replicating the Infonavit model.

Sheinbaum criticized the neoliberal model that treated housing as a business, leaving 850,000 homes abandoned. She assured that her government is working to settle this historic debt with workers by building affordable, well-located, and serviced homes.

Details of the “Housing for Wellbeing” Program in Baja California:

  • Infonavit will build 35,000 homes, starting with 500 units across six land reserves in the state (five in Mexicali and one in Tijuana), on lots totaling over 40,000 m².
  • Conavi has already begun construction on 2,044 of the planned 15,000 homes in municipalities such as Playas de Rosarito, Cucapá, Polígono 3, Valle Misiones, and Río Nuevo.
  • Youth housing: 408 homes will be built specifically for young people who are studying or working, located near employment centers.

Secretary of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development Edna Elena Vega reported that this year 4,500 homes will be built and 20,000 lots will be regularized with property deeds. Additionally, 27 states across the country have already signed agreements to join the program.

Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila welcomed the launch of this program, which strengthens her State Housing Plan. She highlighted that Baja California is the only state in Mexico with a comprehensive housing plan. Her administration foresees more than 100,000 housing actions to reduce the housing deficit.
