Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has affirmed that the proposed reform to the Law of the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) aims to benefit the nation’s teachers. She guaranteed that no measures will be approved that negatively impact their professional or work lives.

In a message directed to the national teaching community, the president emphasized that the initiative seeks to strengthen ISSSTE’s healthcare system through a more equitable contribution scheme from high-earning, trusted employees. «We will not approve anything that generates distrust or problems for teachers. There is no need for mobilizations because our commitment is not to affect their professional and work development,» she stated.

Sheinbaum Pardo announced that Secretary of the Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez will meet with representatives of the national teaching community to clarify doubts and ensure that the reform will not harm their rights. ISSSTE Director Martí Batres Guadarrama and Secretary of Public Education Mario Delgado Carrillo will also attend this meeting.

The president explained that the initiative stipulates that only high-earning, trusted employees, including top officials like herself, will make larger contributions to strengthen ISSSTE’s healthcare system. «It’s about making the system fairer. Those of us who receive higher incomes as trusted employees will contribute more to improve ISSSTE’s health services. It’s a matter of justice,» she highlighted.

Addressing one of the primary concerns of the education sector, Sheinbaum also stated that the pension system will be reviewed based on available resources, considering it currently unjust. To this end, working groups have been established to evaluate viable and sustainable solutions.

Finally, she mentioned that another fundamental aspect of the reform is reducing debt for beneficiaries.
