Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has launched construction of the Los Cabos Regional General Hospital in Baja California Sur. This facility, part of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), will serve more than 500,000 residents. It will be the first hospital to operate under the IMSS Universal model, allowing it to provide medical care to people without social security or affiliated with other institutions.
The hospital will feature 260 new beds—adding to the 350 existing across the state—along with 53 outpatient offices, nine operating rooms, and a staff of 2,648 healthcare professionals. It will offer 46 medical specialties, including cardiology, oncology, gynecology, ophthalmology, and neurosurgery. The facility will also be equipped with high-tech tools such as a CT scanner, MRI machine, linear accelerator for cancer treatment, intensive care units, and dialysis centers.
President Sheinbaum emphasized that this project is part of a broader effort to improve quality of life in the region. Other initiatives include the rehabilitation of the Transpeninsular Highway and the roadwork at the FONATUR Roundabout, which will feature a 1.5-kilometer underground vehicle bridge, bike lanes, and pedestrian crossings, with a 450-million-peso investment benefiting 351,000 residents. She also announced the start of construction on the “El Novillo” dam in La Paz to address potable water access, along with ongoing desalination plant projects in coordination with the Los Cabos municipality.
In her remarks, Sheinbaum also reaffirmed support for the Mexican migrant community in the U.S. amid the proposed 5% remittance tax. She noted that 24 U.S. lawmakers have already opposed the measure and urged migrants to write to their representatives to help block its approval.
IMSS Director General Zoé Robledo stated that the hospital will be built on a plot of over 41,000 square meters and will feature state-of-the-art medical technology. General Salvador Cervantes Loza of the Ministry of National Defense added that this project is part of the IMSS 2025–2030 Infrastructure Plan. Meanwhile, Infrastructure Secretary Jesús Esteva announced that the FONATUR Roundabout project will be completed by June 2026 and will generate 3,805 jobs. Baja California Sur Governor Víctor Castro Cosío thanked the president for regularizing 2,500 teaching positions, 500 of which will be granted this year.
