From the Los Pinos Cultural Complex, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo officially presented the 2026 FIFA World Cup, whose opening ceremony will take place on June 11 in Mexico City. Accompanied by federal authorities and FIFA representatives, she emphasized that this event will be a historic opportunity to share with the world Mexico’s culture, unity, and ongoing transformation.
The president noted that Mexico is prepared to welcome 5.5 million visitors, supported by the country’s air and transport infrastructure in Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Mexico City. Recent investments include the remodeling of the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) and the railway connection to the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA). She also announced the launch of the “Social World Cup”, which will feature the construction of soccer fields, inclusive tournaments, and FIFA FESTS to promote sports participation across the country.
In her address, Sheinbaum shared a special message for the Mexican National Team: “When you step onto the field, remember the great nation you represent.” She also announced that she will donate her ticket number 001 to a young girl or soccer fan as a symbol of inclusion and hope for future generations.
Gabriela Cuevas Barron, coordinator of government efforts, reported that Mexico will host 13 matches in three cities — Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey — supported by a Comprehensive Security Plan. She added that the World Cup is expected to generate between $1.8 and $3 billion USD in economic impact, and that the “Mexico 2026” program will bring public events to all 32 states of the country.
Jurgen Mainka, Executive Director of FIFA Mexico, highlighted that this will be the largest World Cup in history, featuring 48 national teams, 104 matches, and more than 800,000 fans in Mexican stadiums. He estimated that over 6 billion people will follow the tournament through global broadcasts, while millions more will enjoy cultural experiences at the FIFA Fan Festivals in the host countries.
