President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, officially launched the construction of the Tren Maya cargo infrastructure, a project set to strengthen the economic development of the country’s southeast by facilitating the transport of goods and passengers. Sheinbaum emphasized that the Tren Maya is already a reality, having transported 1.2 million passengers to date.
The cargo project will be executed in two stages over the next two and a half years, generating 26,200 direct jobs. The construction will be led by the «Felipe Ángeles» Engineering Corps of the Secretariat of National Defense, and it will connect with the Port of Progreso, currently under expansion by the Navy Secretariat. Additionally, in Palenque, there will be a connection with the Interoceanic Train.
The infrastructure will include 10 cargo complexes, five intermodal terminals located in Poxilá, Progreso, Cancún, Palenque, and Chetumal, as well as operation yards and a fuel spur, all interconnected across the 1,553 kilometers of existing railway tracks. In the first phase, terminals in Poxilá, Progreso, and Cancún will be built, along with the construction and rehabilitation of 70 kilometers of railway lines.
During the event, Sheinbaum also announced the construction of new universities in Yucatán, the promotion of the fishing industry in Progreso, and the strengthening of honey commercialization. Yucatán Governor Joaquín Jesús Díaz Mena praised these initiatives as part of the Mayan Renaissance program, jointly driven by federal and state governments.
The president was accompanied by representatives from the Tren Maya construction companies, senior officials from the National Defense and Navy Secretariats, as well as federal and state government officials. All reaffirmed their commitment to consolidating this strategic project for the transformation of southeastern Mexico.
